POWER SCHEDULING

The Challenges of Moving Power

Moving power from where it is purchased to where it is needed by load - or by a counterparty - is another constant challenge for market participants.  That’s why the services provided by APM’s Power Scheduling Group are critical to energy transaction execution and successful portfolio management.

APM Power Schedulers

APM experienced Power Schedulers are able to execute scheduling services of all types – including day-ahead physical transactions, day-ahead financial transactions and tagging of power transactions – in and across all market regions in the U.S.  The Power Scheduling Group can also handle reservations of daily or hourly point-to-point and network transmission via OASIS sites.

Close Coordination with Other APM Groups

The Scheduling Services Group works closely with other groups at APM, including the Power Trading Teams, the Transmission Team and the Origination Group.

Power Scheduling Services

Specific services provided by the Power Trading Team include help with:

  • Scheduling power in both financial markets (ISO/RTO) and physical markets (non-ISO/RTO) to meet contractual obligations and formal scheduling requirements
  • Scheduling power and transmission in a manner that keeps power costs as low as possible
  • Following regionally-accepted scheduling practices
  • Purchase short-term transmission rights and tag physical energy transactions
  • Capturing transmission transactions in APM’s risk management software

TRANSMISSION

Transmission Congestion

Anticipating when and where transmission congestion will occur, and to what extent, is a complex undertaking.  And anticipating the future availability of physical transmission service is even more complex.

This is why APM has a Transmission Group – composed of experts in power trading, engineering and economics – who use sophisticated software to provide power flow modeling, analysis, strategy recommendations, and execution services for physical and financial transmission products.

APM Transmission Group

APM Transmission Group can help with congestion analysis and execution services for financial transmission products for each of the organized power markets (ISOs/RTOs) in the U.S. Also they can analyze physical transmission portfolios in non-ISO/RTO regions.

The analytical work done by the Transmission Group, which helps to hedge power basis and power delivery risk, directly complements the power and fuel hedging done by the APM Power Trading Team.

Transmission Services

Specific services performed by the Transmission Group include help with:

  • Developing and executing customized congestion management strategies (for FTRs, ARRs, TCRs and CRRs)
  • Developing and executing auction bidding strategies for congestion rights, based on quantitative models, historical market data and fundamental analysis
  • Developing and implementing strategies to accommodate new ISO/RTO market structures
  • Analyzing and purchasing transmission reservations across ISO/RTO footprints
  • Assessing and recommending physical transmission portfolios that complement an energy hedging strategy

Long-Term Transmission Risks

To address the long-term risk of locational marginal pricing and congestion risk in ISO/RTO markets, and the risk of physical transmission constraints in non-ISO/RTO markets, APM’s Transmission Group also provides analytical work and consulting on the current and forecasted status of the transmission grid.

Services That Address Long-Term Transmission Risks

Specific ways that we can help you include:

Generation Siting Studies – APM has experience quantifying the risk associated with the location of new generation.
LMP Forecasting – APM provides hourly LMP forecasting one year forward and typical week forecasting up to 10 years forward. APM also maintains a database of the latest transmission and generation plans that are used to develop the economic dispatch and resulting LMP values.
Long-Term Planning – APM can work with your planning and engineering staff to establish the transmission base case and assumptions. This enables us to evaluate the economic impact of a new power plant, or a transmission line addition or upgrade.
Interconnection Process – APM can assist with the lengthy and involved ISO/RTO generation interconnection process.
